Overview /_Outputs

Besides direct project outputs like

  • several reports on "Public participation and the Water Framework Directive" that provided an overview of participatory planning processes in River Basin Management Planning (RBMP) in Europe;
  • nine national case study reports (Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom);
  • the final scientific report;
  • this interactive web communication platform and
  • the handbook on the methodology of public participation for implementing the Water Framework Directive (WFD),

Further impacts of HarmoniCOP were expected. The project should contribute to a cleaner, healthier and safer environment and even improve the quality of life more generally. Effective PP turns passive subjects into active citizens that gain more control over their own lives and become more integrated in society. The research dealt with a major knowledge gap for implementing the European Water Framework Directive. The analysis of the international-legal context of PP and the development of a common glossary of PP-related terms are examples how the gap will be bridged.

In conclusion, the research should, directly or indirectly:

  • support the effective implementation of the PP provisions of the WFD,
  • support the implementation of PP provisions in other EU-directives and international treaties (i.e. Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive),
  • increase public acceptance of water and environmental management,
  • facilitate compliance monitoring of the WFD and other environmental directives by the affected parties, and
  • promote the attainment of the environmental goals of the EU.
